Q. When does the cheer season start?
Start Date: August 1st. The first 20 hours of practice are mandatory and especially critical as each player is required to meet specific conditioning requirements before they can participate in the regular season.
Missing any time once practice starts can cause your athlete to fall behind. Please plan accordingly, and ensure that family vacations are not scheduled during this time. We strongly recommend that your child begin to prepare for this at least one month prior to the start date.
Q. How many days/hours are cheer practices?
Please keep in mind that cheer is a huge commitment. Early season practices are typically 10 hours per week. After mandatory conditioning hours are met, practices reduce to 3 days per week. Practices are typically 2 hours long.
Practices in August and September take place on the gated baseball field at Torrance Park. Parents are welcome to attend practices, but only badged TYFC staff and players are allowed to enter the field.
Beginning in October, practices will move to an indoor location in Torrance. Location will be finalized once teams are formed, and coaches are selected.
Q. How long does the cheer season run and how many games are there?
All teams will cheer at TYFC football games. Each football team typically plays 6-8 games per season, not including playoff or championship games that typically begin in early to mid-October.
Final games will be different for each team, depending on the advancement through the playoffs/championships. The football season typically ends mid - late November.
A full schedule in advance of the season may not be possible. Please make sure you leave the entire day on each Saturday of the season available for play. Please make sure your lifestyle is conducive to making this type of commitment and that you can leave your schedule flexible throughout the ENTIRE season. TYFC will do everything in our capacity to provide as much advance notice as possible as to where and when teams will be playing. Note that teams may have a BYE week.
Following the football season, competitive teams will continue on to a local and regional competition season through the end of January. Additional information will be provided at the parent Q&A session that will be scheduled in June.
There will be a League Cheer Competition in October to determine the winners who will move on to the WESCON Regional Cheer Competition in November. Competition dates are to be determined.
Competitive squads may also go to the end of January JAMZ Competition in Las Vegas if they so choose. This is independent of Pop Warner and attendance fees are NOT included in your registration fees.
Q. Do the cheerleaders compete in cheer competitions?
Yes. Cheerleading is not just about the games. Our cheerleaders not only practice hard to be there for their fellow TYFC football players and families, but they are also ramping up and preparing for their biggest day of the season…The West Coast Conference Cheer and Dance Competition!!!!
The cheerleading competition is a very exciting worthwhile experience for our girls. Not only do they showcase to their families and friends the culmination of all their hard work during the cheer season, but they also compete against cheerleaders that are their own age and skill level. Many parents are simply amazed at how much their child has grown and learned during the season. Watching them during the competitions will make you realize what talented, dedicated and hard-working individuals each one of the is. Their spirit is truly contagious!
